Dragon Ball Timeline FAQ

The questions fans ask most about the Dragon Ball multiverse — answered from the timeline map.

How many timelines are in Dragon Ball?

This map tracks five. T1 is the original timeline, T2 is the peaceful branch created when Future Trunks delivers the heart-virus cure, T3 is the main show timeline you watched (a copy of T2), T4 is Trunks' surviving future and the stage for the Goku Black arc, and T5 is an external timeline created long ago by a mortal from Universe 12 who built the first time machine in history.

Which timeline is the anime set in?

Timeline 3 (T3) — the main show timeline. Everything you watched across Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super happens here. It carries the lone silver Time Ring, marking it as the present.

Why can't Future Trunks return to his own timeline?

Because of the Fixed Timeline Principle: once a timeline's future is resolved, a time machine can't land in it. When Trunks tries to arrive in a fixed past, the machine instead spins off a brand-new branch. That's why a Trunks who leaves T1 or T3 ends up in a copy rather than back home.

What's the difference between Timeline 1 and Timeline 4?

They are near-identical ruined futures — the Androids win and the world is devastated. The one decisive difference is what Trunks knows when he comes home: T4 is a copy of T1's dark future where Trunks survives and returns armed with knowledge from the past, which sets the stage for the Goku Black arc.

How is Timeline 3 created?

T3 is a copy of T2, created when T1's Cell could not land in T2's fixed past. Following the Fixed Timeline Principle, Cell's arrival spun off a new branch instead — the timeline that became the main show.

Does Goku Black create new timelines when he travels?

No. Gods don't branch. Zamasu and Goku Black move between existing timelines using the Time Rings without creating copies. Only physical, mortal time-machine travel into a fixed timeline branches reality.

Is Cell the same in every timeline?

Yes. Cell is the constant: he is born in every timeline from T1 to T4 and always behaves the same way — hunting Androids 17 and 18 to reach his Perfect Form. Only his fate changes, decided by who is alive to stop him.

What is Timeline 5?

T5 is external to the Cell-saga chart. It was created long ago by a mortal from Universe 12 who built the first time machine in history, so it predates every other event mapped here.
